Breast Reduction

Breast reduction is one of the surgical breast procedures that results in the highest patient satisfaction. This has to do with the fact that patients can be alleviated or even freed from real functional complaints, which makes it an extremely satisfying procedure. Breast reduction is therefore not a primarily aesthetic procedure, but a medically indicated one, and it belongs to the classic procedures of plastic breast surgery.

What is a breast reduction?

In this procedure, also called reduction mammaplasty, the breast is reduced in size and weight by removing breast tissue and skin, and then reshaped into a new, smaller and usually also firmer breast. The removed breast tissue is sent for examination. There are a variety of breast reduction techniques, all of which have their own subtleties. The many years of experience of Dr. Allemann allow her to select the technique that suits you and your breast shape and size best in order to achieve the ideal result. We do not only want to relieve you of your symptoms but also provide you with a symmetrical breast that fits your body shape.

Am I a good candidate for a breast reduction?

Breast reduction is not a primarily aesthetically motivated operation. It is the physical complaints such as back and neck pain, daily incision of the bra straps and skin irritations in the lower breast crease that make women think about breast reduction.

It is not unusual for large breasts to lead to significant physical restrictions in everyday life. Sporting activities in particular are usually impossible for women with large breasts. This can often lead to severe psychological stress and even social withdrawal for the affected patients.

Breasts that are too large can have a family disposition and be pronounced already in young women. Weight gain or pregnancy and breastfeeding can also lead to an increase in the size and weight of breasts.

What can I expect after a breast reduction?

Breast reduction allows you to reduce your breast size and weight significantly in comparison to the original cup size. This procedure can decisively alleviate or even eliminate your complaints such as back/neck pain, skin irritations and physical restrictions.

A reduced breast also always represents a tightened breast, which provides a more youthful appearance. Breast reduction allows for a new attitude towards life and exercise for most patients. This ensures a significant improvement in the quality of life.

What happens during the consultation?

In a detailed consultation we will decide together whether a breast reduction is the right procedure for you. Based on your preoperative breast condition and the desired size and shape of your breast, we will choose and explain the ideal surgical technique for you. The main differences are the incisions and the resulting scars.

It goes without saying that we try to achieve your desired target size as closely as possible. It is very important to us to go through all details of the operation and to advise you on all questions. Our many years of experience help us to understand your complaints and provide you with long-term advice.

In order to determine the ideal technique for you, we will examine your breasts, take all relevant measurements and digitally document them.

Our greatest wish is to fulfil yours. The prerequisite for every intervention in our practice is a reflective discussion in which all details and your motives are examined in detail. From the moment you enter our practice, we are your partner who will advise you on all questions. We rely on our many years of experience, which helps us to go the right way, even in less clear cases.

As a rule, we recommend having a mammography before the operation in order to clarify any preexisting abnormalities in advance.

In certain cases, with real and relevant functional complaints, the health insurance will cover the costs. In this case, we first ask for cost coverage at the health insurance company.

How is the surgery performed?

The procedure lasts 2 to 3 hours and takes place under general anesthesia. Depending on the initial situation, it can be performed on an outpatient basis in our certified operating theatre or under inpatient conditions in the hospital. This is evaluated individually in each case and decided upon during our consultation.

After the operation you will be given an elastic bandage, which can usually be replaced by a sports bra on the first postoperative day.

What about the follow-up treatment?

As with any surgical procedure, you will feel slight pain in the first few days. You will receive adequate painkillers from us and we will be there for you in case of any questions. In order to drain off wound water and blood, in certain cases drainages are inserted, which can be removed after 2-3 days.

In the first few weeks you can expect more or less pronounced swelling. You should wear your sports bra for six weeks and avoid any sporting activities during this time.

The first check-up takes place on the first day after the operation. We will usually see you again after 14 days, 6 weeks and 3, 6 and 12 months. You can expect the final result after the swelling has subsided after about 3-6 months. However, you will immediately feel the relief of the weight reduction.
