Dynamic Wrinkle treatment with Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin, better known under the brand name «Botox», has been used for over 30 years for a variety of predominantly neurological complaints in medicine. It was first used as a drug to treat strabismus in 1979 and has been approved as a drug since 1993. Since the beginning of the nineties it has been used in cosmetic dermatology to smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by facial expressions, such as frown lines, forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet.

The smoothing of mimic wrinkles with botulinum toxin is the most frequently performed minimally invasive aesthetic treatment in both the USA and Switzerland. This is because the treatment is short and very effective, does not require a time-out, and produces excellent results when performed by an expert.

The effect of wrinkle smoothing is based on the paralysis of the mimic musculature, where botulinum toxin blocks the signal transmission between nerves and muscles and thus prevents muscle contracture. The effect is delayed and becomes visible after 3-7 days and shows its maximum after 2 weeks. Since the body degrades the botulinum toxin over time, the effect is completely reversible. Depending on expressivity and strain on the mimic muscles, it lasts 3-6 months. With repeated applications the duration of action can be extended up to 9 months.

However, there are also indications for an injection of botulinum toxin in the area of the lower face and neck, but these should only be carried out with experienced injectors.

The actual treatment with botulinum toxin is carried out in our treatment rooms and takes less than 30 minutes. In order to make the needle puncture as painless as possible for you, the skin can be treated with an anaesthetic cream 20 minutes in advance. Additional cooling during and after the treatment also helps to reduce discomfort.

In the defined treatment area we will then determine exactly where and how much botulinum toxin to inject. The units to be injected are calculated according to your muscle activity and mass, and the injection points are precisely marked in order to achieve the best possible result.

The smallest units of diluted botulinum toxin are then injected into the corresponding muscles. For this we use the finest needles so that you hardly notice the injection.

Our experienced hands can calculate the correct dosage and thus consciously maintain a certain amount of residual facial expression to prevent a mask-like appearance – according to our credo: “Less is more”. The result is a relaxed, friendly and fresh appearance.

After the treatment there is nothing special to consider. You can immediately immerse yourself in everyday life again. If necessary, there may be mild redness around the injection sites.

The only caveat is that you should not visit your yoga class on the treatment day in order for the active ingredient to remain in place.

Risks of a botulinum toxin treatment are usually minimal, very rarely undesirable effects can occur. During the injection you will feel slight discomfort or pain and possibly a burning sensation.

Rare (in approx. 2-3 % of treatment cases)

• Hematoma at injection site
• Asymmetries
• Temporary headaches
• Eyebrow ptosis (deeper lying eyebrows)
• Mephisto/Spock eyebrow
• Too weak or too strong effect on target muscle

Very rare (< 1%)

• Genuine muscular dysfunction and lid ptosis
