Liposuction

The body deposits body fat in different places on women and men. Depending on their predisposition, fat deposits can reach uneven proportions which can only be altered to a limited extent by dieting and exercising. If the proportions of the body are disturbed as a result and neither sport intensification nor a disciplined diet help, patients often suffer a great deal. However, liposuction is not a method to eliminate general overweight.

What is liposuction?

In liposuction, a local anaesthetic and vasoconstricting medication is first distributed evenly in the fatty tissue via small skin incisions. The fat tissue is then aspirated with a fan-shaped suction cannula. A large part of the fat layer can be reduced by liposuction, but an individual rest of fat cells must remain in order to avoid irregularities. The connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels are usually not destroyed by the suction process. The surgical access is closed with fine sutures.

Thanks to its elasticity, the skin over the aspirated areas is attached to the new shape. In addition, the internal scarring processes lead to a shrinkage of the skin, so that normally no excess skin folds remain.

Liposuction can be performed on almost any part of the body. However, the upper limit of the amount of fat that can be sucked off is approx. 5 litres, depending on the body type. Liposuction can be well combined with other operations in order to carry out minor corrections or, for example, to gain fat for lipofilling.

Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

You want a well-proportioned body and have already tried minimally invasive/conservative therapy methods? Then liposuction can be a good solution. In the case of an extensive fat distribution disorder, liposuction is actually the only way to remove larger amounts of fat from certain parts of the body and thus shape the entire body.

What can I expect after liposuction?

The excess fat deposits are permanently removed by liposuction. This allows the body to be “remodelled” so that the suctioned areas harmonize aesthetically with the adjacent body regions. The final result can be assessed after 2 – 3 months. With a repeated general increase in weight, the remaining fat cells can increase in size and thus create new fat deposits.

What happens during consultation?

In a first conversation we will explain to you in detail about the different possibilities to reduce the fat tissue, and together we will find the right method for you. In addition, we will show you the accompanying therapy options, record your weight profile and create a photo documentation.

It is our concern to accompany you in this topic and to provide interdisciplinary advice and care even before the operation, because long-term results and motivated patients require a holistic approach.

What's the surgery like?

As a rule, we operate on extensive liposcution in pairs. This enables us to keep the operation time and thus the anaesthesia for the patient short. Depending on the extent of the operation, it takes 60-90 minutes and usually takes place under general anaesthesia in our certified operating theatre. In the case of smaller regions to be aspirated, local anesthesia or tumescent anesthesia with or without twilight sleep can also be performed.

The fat is removed through various small skin incisions. The skin incisions are then closed and you put on compression clothing to prevent the development of bruises and seromas (= accumulations of wound secretions) and to support even shrinkage of the skin.

This is a day surgery procedure. Once you have recovered from the operation and eaten a bite, you can go home on the same day. We recommend that you be picked up by an accompanying person and not be alone during the first postoperative night.

What about the follow-up treatment?

The first check-up takes place on the first day after the operation. The stitches are removed after 1 week. Intensive cooling is necessary for the decongestant treatment. It takes approx. 2 weeks until the bruising and surrounding swelling have disappeared. We then usually see each other again after 7 days, 6 weeks, 3 and 6 months. You can expect the final result after a few months.

Depending on the extent of liposuction, we recommend wearing compression clothing for 4-6 weeks.

What are the risks?

Every operation involves surgical and anesthesia-related risks. There is an increased risk of surgical complications, especially for patients who smoke or suffer from obesity or diabetes.
