Breast augmentation with implants
The reasons for a breast augmentation are not only manifold, they are also personal. Breasts can be small due to a genetic disposition or lose their fullness after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Even in the case of weight loss, it is usually the breast that women lose weight of first. Size improvement is the most common motivation for a breast operation, but even with sagging skin or asymmetrical shape, the insertion of implants can lead to a better and more aesthetic result. Regardless of whether the aim is to correct the size, tighten the skin or improve the symmetry of your breast, in a consultation we will together find out which shape and size suits you best.
What is a breast augmentation with implants?
Breast augmentation with implants is one of the most frequently performed plastic-aesthetic operations worldwide. In this procedure we place silicone implants above or below the pectoral muscle, resulting in an enlargement of the breast. We pay special attention to symmetry. It is important to us that the selected size fits the rest of the body and corresponds to a natural appearance.
Am I a good candidate for a breast augmentation with implants?
Would you like a larger, naturally shaped breast? Would you like a more sumptuous décolleté? We will be happy to assist you as objective advisors. We would like to support you in getting closer to your goal of a naturally shaped, full and symmetrical breast. The harmony of your physiognomy with your personal desired goal is our priority in deciding upon an intervention.
What can I expect after a breast enlargement?
Breast augmentation with implants makes it possible to adjust and increase the cup size to your wishes. We always pay attention to a natural, symmetrical shape that is in harmony with your physical conditions.
What happens during the consultation?
In a detailed consultation we will decide together whether a breast augmentation is suitable for you. It is very important to us to illuminate all sides and consequences of the procedure and to advise you on all questions. Our many years of experience help us to understand your goals and put them in relation to the possibilities that suit you best.
If you only wish a discreet enlargement, the correction of asymmetric breasts or a significant increase in breast size, we will discuss the appropriate procedure with you in detail. Based on your wishes and with regard to your physique, we will show you the various options of implant shapes, sizes and positions. In order to determine the optimal technique for you, we will explain the surgical incision visually.
Dr. Allemann operates with the so-called “No-Touch” and “Minimal Scar” technique. With the help of a funnel the implant is inserted into the prepared pocket without touching it, which enables a significantly smaller incision and thus results in a smaller scar. This technique reduces the risk of infection and should minimize the development of capsular fibrosis.
Implant shape and size
Implants differ not only in size but also in shape: there are round and teardrop-shaped implants with great variability and different sizes. Round implants promote a full cleavage, while drop-shaped implants look more natural. We only use silicone implants from renowned and established manufacturers that have been tested in multiple studies.
Implant placement
Implants can be placed over the muscle, under the muscle or only partially under the muscle (dual plane). The decisive factor here is how good your skin and tissue quality is in the chest and décolleté area and how active you lifestyle is.
Skin incision
The skin incision for the insertion of the implants can be placed in the armpit, around the areola or in the submammary fold.
In order to determine the ideal technique for you, we will thoroughly examine your breasts, take all relevant measurements and digitally document them with photos. Based on your measurements and your personal wishes, we will discuss the implant sizes. You will have the opportunity to “try on” various silicone implants before the operation to familiarize yourself with size and material. Only then will we decide which size and shape is right for you.
By asking specific questions, we want to get a thorough picture of your medical history in order to identify any possible contraindications for the procedure at an early stage. It is our deep concern to support you with all your questions, worries and wishes. We take our time for this, but also give it to you. Experience has shown that it makes sense to sleep on it for another night and then decide. That’s why we will see each other a second time for a final consult before we decide on a surgery date.
How is the surgery performed?
The procedure takes 60-90 minutes and is performed under general anaesthesia in our certified operating theatre. It is an outpatient day surgery. Once you have recovered from the operation and eaten a bite, you can return home on the same day. We recommend that you be picked up by an accompanying person and not be alone during the first postoperative night.
What about the follow-up treatment?
As with any surgical procedure, you will feel slight pain in the first few days after surgery. We will give you adequate painkillers and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can also expect more or less pronounced swelling in the first few weeks. You should wear a sports bra for six weeks. We also recommend that certain patients wear a chest band for two weeks. The first check-up takes place the day after the operation. We will usually see you again after 14 days, 6 weeks and 3, 6 and 12 months. You can expect the final result after the swelling has subsided after about 3-6 months.

What are the risks?
Every operation involves surgical and anaesthesia-related risks. There is an increased risk of surgical complications, especially for patients who smoke or suffer from obesity or diabetes.
Risks associated with any surgical procedure
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Unpleasant or excessive scarring
- Wound healing disorders
- Thrombosis
Risks of breast augmentation
- Rotation of implants
- Noticeable implant margins
- Asymmetry
- Implant rupture
- (Temporary) sensory disturbance of the nipple(s) (rare)
- Impaired ability to breastfeed (rare)
- Capsular fibrosis
As a natural reaction to a foreign body the body forms a fine connective tissue capsule around the implant after its insertion. Some patients may experience a thickening of this capsule, which in extreme cases can lead to deformation of the implants and pain. This situation is called capsular fibrosis and may require an implant change with removal of (part of) the capsule.
