Correction of the men's breast

Most people have a clear idea of what a man’s breast and chest should look like: It should be muscular, defined and firm. In a healthy man, this ideal can usually be achieved through targeted muscle training and a general reduction in body fat. The situation is different for men suffering from gynaecomastia, i.e., excessive growth of the male breast. Gynaecomastia often leads to a feminization of the appearance, which usually leads to reduced self-confidence and an impairment in quality of life. In addition, the enlarged breasts are often sensitive to touch or in some cases even cause pain.

There are many causes for the development of a gynaecomastia, which should be explored in detail before any surgery. However, in most cases of gynaecomastia, a cause cannot be identified. In general, in most cases a surgical procedure is the only way to permanently normalize the gynaecomastia and its symptoms.

What is a subcutaneous mastectomy?

The surgical reduction of the enlarged male breast is one of the three most frequently performed plastic surgery procedures in men. Before a surgical procedure can be performed, various possible underlying causes auf gynaecomastia, such as certain medications, a tumor or a real hormonal disease should be excluded. The latter is one of the most common causes of male breast growth.

The goal of the surgical procedure, called subcutaneous mastectomy, is the removal of the excessive “female” breast and the restoration of a male chest and upper body. The extent of the clinical findings will determine which surgical technique is chosen. In general, liposuction, surgical removal or a combination of both can lead to the desired result.

We usually opt for the third option and perform surgical removal of the increased mammary gland and a liposuction of the surrounding fatty tissue. With this technique we can safely remove the excess tissue and achieve the most symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing results. In the case of very minimal or pronounced findings, an alternative technique may be used.

Is this procedure right for me?

If you suffer from an enlarged, female looking breast that may even hurt when touched, if you don’t like to show yourself topless or even try to hide your breast under your clothes, a subcutaneous mastectomy can provide a permanent relief of your discomfort. In some cases, your health insurance will even cover the cost of this procedure. In this situation, we will ask for a cost credit in advance.

What can I expect after a breast reduction?

During the operation, the excessive breast tissue will be removed and a defined male breast can be formed. Sensitivity to touch and pain can also be reduced or even completely eliminated. The new male shape not only contributes to an increased self-confidence, it also creates a new attitude to life.

What happens during the consultation?

Before deciding whether an operation can be performed, certain treatable causes of gynaecomastia must be ruled out. First and foremost, this is done by a thorough clinical examination, determining a number of values in your blood and ask detailed questions about medications and your medical history. Under certain circumstances, an ultrasound or mammography of the breast can provide further information. We will be happy to work together with your family doctor to bring all relevant information together.

The surgical technique depends on the extent of your findings. It is very im
