rejuvenation with so-called “fillers” take second place among the most popular non-surgical, minimally invasive cosmetic procedures.
One reason why this procedure has become so popular is certainly the paradigm shift in our basic understanding of aging. We are particularly sensitive to the visible changes caused by aging in the face.
Gravity is not, as has long been assumed, the only factor that causes our face to age so markedly and the skin and connective tissue to sag. Especially the loss of the underlying volume of soft tissue (epidermis, dermis, musculature, subcutaneous fat tissue) as well as the bones contribute significantly to the aging of the face with its typical features. Not only the injection of wrinkles, but more importantly the restoring of the volume, the so called “volumization” of the face in the correct places can model youthful curves, which makes the treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers so popular.
The filling substance used nowadays is almost exclusively hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in human connective tissue and contributes decisively to the structural integrity of our skin. It is therefore a body related substance which is well tolerated by the immune system (biocompatible and non-immunogenic). It has a high water-binding capacity and has a short half-life of approx. 24 hours in an unstabilized form. The hyaluronic acid found in fillers is produced by bacteria and stabilized by a cross-linking process, which makes it much more durable. Nevertheless, hyaluronic acid is not a permanent solution, as it is broken down by the body after 6-12 months depending on the product. During the aging process, hyaluronic acid naturally decreases in our body.
There is a variety of hyaluronic acid fillers on the market. We work exclusively with established fillers from leading manufacturers and with products that have been tested in multiple clinical studies. There are also different fillers within the same product line. The differences are fundamentally based on the nature and extent of the stabilisation process (cross-linking), which affects the viscosity, consistency and durability in the tissue. This complexity only in the choice of product demonstrates the need for in-depth knowledge to decide which filler, how much, where, how deep and by which technique to inject. This also includes deep knowledge of the human anatomy.
As plastic surgeons, Dr. Allemann is deeply familiar with the anatomy of the face and the optimal injection techniques for a natural and aesthetic result.
Do you want a more youthful look with clear contours? Do you have lines or wrinkles that disturb you? Are you looking for a minimally invasive procedure whose results are immediately visible? Then the treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers is a good solution. Because even if the result does not meet your expectations, you can reverse it immediately.
The following areas are well suited for treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers:
Fillers allow us to fill wrinkles and volumize and contour facial regions. In addition, moisture is added to the treated areas, which can also contribute to plumper skin and youthful appearance.
In a detailed first consultation we will analyse your face and discuss therapy options based on our findings and your needs. Only then will we jointly decide whether and which areas are suitable for treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers. As a second part of our discussion, we will inquire about your medical history to ensure that there are no contraindications for treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers.
Before every injection we also take a digital photograph, in order to be able to compare treatment results.
Although most fillers contain local anesthesia, we prefer to minimize discomfort for the patient by applying an anesthetic cream 20 minutes before. It can also help to reduce the risk of hematoma. Cooling the area to be treated before and after treatment has the same effect.
The actual treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers can take anywhere from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the area(s) to be treated, and is carried out in our treatment rooms. The product individually selected for each region to be treated is injected slowly and in a controlled manner into the desired region. Often we do not use needles for this purpose, but blunt cannulas, which traumatize the tissue much less and have a lower incidence of hematoma. In contrast to botulinum toxin, the effect of hyaluronic acid filler is immediately visible. You can even follow the progress with the hand mirror.
Our experienced hands can precisely calculate the correct dosage to prevent a “overdone” look – according to our credo: “Less is more”. The result is a natural, rejuvenating look.
After the injection we will gently massage the treated areas to help to evenly distribute the product. We recommend that you cool the treated area after the treatment, and we will give you a cool pack to take home with you. In addition, you should not visit a sauna or solarium for the first 12 hours after treatment, avoid intensive sunbathing and other skin irritating measures.
Risks of a filler treatment are usually minimal, very rarely undesirable side effects can occur. During the injection you will feel slight discomfort and possibly a burning sensation.
