The skin around the area of the eyes is the thinnest of the whole body. It is therefore not surprising that the aging process shows itself early and particularly pronounced in the area of the eyes. The eyes make up a decisive part of our facial expression, the tissue is constantly in motion. Crows’ feet are often the first sign of skin aging even at a young age. The age-related loss of skin elasticity leads to excess tissue in the area of the upper and lower eyelids. These changes make us look tired and exhausted, although we may still be bursting with vitality. In certain cases the sagging skin in the upper eyelid area can even lead to a restriction of our field of vision. An eyelid lift can solve these problems in the long term and restore a radiant, youthful appearance.
Eyelid lifting is an operation that leads to an improvement in the eyelids and, in part, the associated quality of vision. Accordingly, a distinction must be made between a lifting of the upper eyelids and the lower eyelids.
Upper eyelid lifting
Upper eyelid lifting, also known as upper blepharoplasty in medical terms, is one of the most frequently performed plastic aesthetic procedures worldwide. The skin in the area of the upper eyelids (drooping eyelids), which has sagged and lost its elasticity due to aging, is removed. In some cases also some fat or even muscle is removed, in order to restore the youthful shape of the eye. The scar is placed in the crease of the upper eyelid so that it is hardly visible. The result is a radiant and fresh appearance.
Lower lid surgery
Lower lid plastic surgery can treat various problems, such as bags under the eyes, excess skin and herniated fat (puffiness of the lower eyelid). The incision is often made in the area of the conjunctiva so that there are no visible scars. This way, excess fat can be removed or repositioned. In the case of excess skin in the area of the lower eyelids, the incision can be made so close to the edge of the eyelid that the scar is hardly visible.
Eyelid plastic surgery can correct drooping eyelids that restrict your field of vision or remove bags or excess skin under your eyes that make you look tired. Your eyes will regain a youthful shape that reflects a vital, youthful self.
In a detailed consultation, we will decide whether an eyelid plastic surgery is suitable for you. With a thorough examination we will assess and measure your clinical findings. Digital photographs will be taken in order to visualize and explain the clinical the findings to you. Accordingly, we will recommend a therapy option that is the most suitable for you.
Depending on the clinical picture, we will also explain potential alternative treatment options such as filling hollowed eyes with autologous fat or fillers, as well as the possibility of periocular rejuvenation with our specialized ablative fractional lasers.
It is very important to us to illuminate all sides and consequences of a procedure and to be at your side to advise you on all questions. Our many years of experience help us to understand your goals and set them in relation to the possibilities that suit you best.
Upper blepharoplasty usually takes 60 minutes and is performed in local anaesthesia. Depending on the procedure for the lower eyelid, the operation can last anywhere from 60-120 minutes and can be performed under local or general anesthesia in our certified operating theatre. It is a day surgery.
Once you have recovered from the operation and eaten a bite, you can return home on the same day. We recommend that you be picked up by an accompanying person. In case of a general anaesthesia you are advised not to spend the first night after surgery by yourself.
As with any surgical procedure, you will feel slight pain in the first few days. We will give you adequate painkillers and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. You can expect more or less pronounced swelling in the first few days. Bruises can last up to two weeks. The first check-up takes place the day after the operation. The stitches can already be removed after 5-7 days.
Every operation involves surgical and anaesthesia-related risks. There is an increased risk of surgical complications, especially for patients who smoke or suffer from obesity or diabetes.
